Maria Sanchez
liked working as a carpenter. At the end of each week, she saw what she
helped build and she got a decent paycheck…though more would be nice.
Maria wondered how to advance in construction. She watched the
Superintendent, a big, loud guy, yell and curse; she knew she couldn’t
do that. Yet she often came up with the idea that helped solve the
problem that faced her crew.
She thought, “If I learned more, got the basics real clear and became
the go-to guy for problems, would anyone notice?” She decided to try.
Maria asked about the next week’s work, then she read training
resources. She asked questions, made suggestions and paid attention.
People noticed. It’s true, some of her co-workers gave her a hard time.
“So what,” she thought, “anyone who hassles me is a dope.”
Then the Project Manager pulled her aside and told her he’d been hearing
good things. He’d never even spoken to her before, now he was promising
advancement if she kept improving. She wasn’t sure she believed him. He
said, “Lots of people think construction is an “Old Boys Network” and
only buddies get promoted. Well it’s true that happens sometimes, but
we’re here to make money. We make the most profit when we do things one
time, quickly and right. You seem to have a knack for that and that’s
why I’m offering you this promotion.”
